When emergency personnel and firefighters arrive on
the scene they have to make a quick assessment of the threat situation. Often, they are confronted by an injured
individual or hysterical bystander who adds tension and stress to an already
confusing environment.
Can hypnosis help a first responder soothe the
distraught person? And once the person
is in a calmer state, can medical services be provided more easily and
successfully?
The French believe so. In an innovative and groundbreaking program, 120
firefighters have been trained in hypnosis which they can use to soothe
someone in physical or emotional distress.
The program’s concept is to arm first responders with a tool that
complements traditional first aid assistance.
Initial feedback on the program is positive with a 100
percent success rate in calming victims and helping them believe the time
the rescue worker took to help them seemed shorter than it actually was. After further analysis, the French may
introduce the program more broadly.
